Recording Academy Honors

On April 29, 2007, I attended the Recording Academy Honors Awards in SF. What a fabulous night! This year, the gala honored songwriter/producer Linda Perry (previously 4 Non Blondes frontwoman), Sammy Hagar, and Narada Michael Walden. The whole night couldn’t have been better. String quartet The Section played an amalgam of Linda Perry’s songs, then backed her up on a Led Zeppelin tune. After a warm-and-fuzzy speech and introductions to his family and friends in attendance, a very, very large band led by Frank Martin and featuring vocalist Lisa Fischer played a mix of Narada’s solo material and songs he produced for Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, and the like. Sammy Hagar had an all-star band honoring him, too — his featuring Ronnie Montrose, Michael Anthony from Van Halen, and Eric Martin (I didn’t know who he was at first; I found out later that he used to front Mr. Big and as a solo artist, he’s…”really big in Japan.”)

Anyway, the whole event was very well done (though I must admit I’m biased since I sit on the Board of Governors for the local Chapter). But aside from the top-notch performances and kind words about the Bay Area, one of the most memorable moments came during Narada Michael Walden’s speech. Not only did he affirm “I love myself” while standing on stage, he managed to get an entire crowd (about 600 guests) of music industry people to stand up and affirm it too! All of a sudden this fancy dinner/concert was transformed into a self-love workshop! If Al Green can start a ministry, Narada can, too. Speaking of, since this blog tends to focus on historical stuff, here’s a link to an interview I did with the man last year that discusses his beginnings with Mahavishnu Orchestra on up to his current work as a producer and artist. More soon…Really! For more on Narada, click here
